| NOTES ON THE ABOVE | ||||
|
Believe it or not the above LPs, based on Rimsky-Korsakov's classic, are only a fraction of the ones doing the rounds. It just seems nobody could get enough of old Rimsky's take on the Arabian Nights, and orient-inspired sleeve designs were produced in their masses between the late fifties right up to the end of the seventies; two of them here even use the same picture. There's something naïve about these covers; there's also something rather intriguing about them. The land of the east is to westerners a land of enchantment, and therefore should fill us with rich dreams and incense-laden imaginings. Yet none of these examples truly come close to such imagery. The attempt was worth trying, and I like nothing better than seeing a girl posing in a gold lamé bikini with cup-shaped breastplates and lycra veils. Here's to more orient-inspired disgraces.
