NOTES ON THE ABOVE

The exotic blend of herbs and spices, the faint aroma of far-off tropical islands, the promise of eternal sunshine and wild, strange music, all this is supposed to be conjured up by these covers. Some work, some don't. The latter has to be Happy South America with the girl sporting a cheesy grin and a pistol. Why the gun? Possibly a reference to revolution and insurgence, as if these things happen every day in Bolivia or some such place. It's quite obvious why this cover does not work: the girl is English and looks like she's be no more south of Clapham than she has of the equator. A truly atrocious cover that puts one off buying the record. In distinct contrast, it is not as inviting as South Seas Affair, which in my view does work. The girl looks like she could eat you for lunch and spit what's left of you back into the sea. Notice how, ever since Ursula Andress waded out of the sea and onto the beach in Dr No, girls in white bikinis proliferated in all types of  media campaigns, and record companies were not shy of utilising the same concept. Pity the cover was in such a poor condition when I discovered it in a dank and musty second-hand shop. Needless to say, the record and cover had long since parted by the time I found it, so I've got no idea what the music sounds like. Hopefully it fulfils the promises mentioned above. In fact, it was part of a series of about five exotic LP's including Pearly Shells. The rest will be added when I find them. And yes, I did break a cardinal rule by including Bob Blaine's Hawaiian Honeymoon since I guess it's him on the cover. But the girls forced me to post it here. Honest! Especially the white one with the cleavage. And the same goes for the Wout Steenhuis (who?) cover, but don't the girls look great. Me jealous of him? Never! There were two versions of this cover, both of them are posted here. The last cover, seemingly bland on first inspection, does have a rather nifty cover when folded out, with a good-looking chick adorning the full sleeve. See here for the gatefold and here for the inner pic.
